Under Stress, We Regress: Importance of Mindfulness in Parenting

When stressed, your ability to remain calm can quickly go out the window. Your capacity to think rationally and identify a values-grounded way of handling the stressful situation becomes compromised. Your thinking races and becomes more rigid, and you react by yelling, punishing, and/or threatening. A parent once told me, “I would not have to yell at my daughter if she just listened and didn’t yell back!” So, how do you stay calm while your buttons are pushed? Key word…✨MINDFULNESS.✨ Mindfulness enables you to see your role clearly and respond effectively. When your buttons are pushed, the goal is to use mindfulness to accept your own feelings and not blame or shame your kids for your frustration, anger, and stress. Not only does it allow you to be aware of and validate the present emotions, but mindfulness actually counterbalances stress. Having mindfulness in these circumstances directs your attention on how to respond in a manner that is aligned with your shared vision and positive values to keep you grounded as a leader. Next time you’re in a stressful situation, try this technique out and see the world of difference it makes. ⭐
