The United Front – When Co-parents Share a Vision

As you read the following two examples, put yourself in the place of the sailor who is seeking answers from the co-captains.

EXAMPLE 1:

The USS Growth has set sail on a routine trip. As they depart, a curious sailor makes her way up to the bridge and asks both co-captains, “Where are we headed?” One co-captain responds, “Well, we are headed to the Unified Coast, where we will dock and explore new territory.” The other co-captain chimes in, “Indeed, it will be an exciting journey with challenges along the way!” They both remind the sailor, “Please ensure that the decks are clean and the galley prepared for mealtime.”

EXAMPLE 2:

The USS Ego has set sail on a routine trip. As they depart, a curious sailor makes his way up to the bridge and asks the co-captains, “Where are we headed?” One co-captain announces, “We are headed due north toward the Divided Islands.” Abruptly, the other co-captain interrupts, “Heck NO! There is no way we are heading there! We are beading due east toward the Self-Centered Coast.” They begin to argue, one trying to talk over the other. Each co-captain tries to convince the sailor that the other does not know what the heck they are doing. The co-captains get lost in their own ego-driven argument. They don’t even recognize that the sailor left the bridge.

What was your experience of being the sailor in example 1? Pay attention to your feelings and thoughts. What impact did the unity and clarity regarding the direction of the ship have on your feelings and thoughts? How safe and secure did you feel on the USS Growth?

What was your experience of being the sailor in example 2? What impact did the lack of unity and clarity regarding the direction of the ship have on your feelings and thoughts? How safe and secure did you feel on the USS Ego?
